(CBS) — Thousands and thousands of dollars — that’s what the kids at one area elementary school raised to help feed the poor.

CBS 2’s Harry Porterfield says the students are all someone you should know.

It was time to strike up the Morgan Township High School band to mark the presentation of a sizeable donation to Heifer International by the school’s K-5 students.

The Heifer organization gives animals to needy people in 40 countries around the world. The elementary students were donating $13,127 to the cause.

A share of it came from students who received $1 for every book they read since September.

Kindergarten student Jacob Kolan knows why he read 20 books. Syundy Good, a fourth-grader, also helped by reading 47 books.

“This is amazing,” says Cindy Sellers Roach, who flew in from the organization’s Little Rock, Ark. headquarters to accept the check at the northwest Indiana school. “To blow their goal out of the water like they did is just amazing.”

Says principal Michelle Friesen-Carper: “The best thing we can do for students is help them get a sense of the world outside of themselves … It says, ‘There’s something besides me in this world.’”
